@#$!*& God I hate this stupid kowtowing to a long obsolete brain-damaged
operating system that is only used by about 3 people (none of who've ever
heard of emacs)...!

Anyway, if you're going to do such a thing, please at least limit the
damage as much as you can -- e.g., "mbuf-depth.el" -- it isn't a problem if
the length is greater than 8+3, only if it's ambiguous within that length.

It's a good idea to add a face, but the indicator format (and property list
or face?) should clearly be a defcustom because everybody seems to have
their own preferred format...

See my reply to Drew for my thoughts on the default format, especially with
respect to David Reitter's comments.
