In today's GNU Emacs CVS, Mon, 2008 Jul 14  10:20 UTC
GNU Emacs 23.0.60.8 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.10)
started with

    EMACS_FONT_LOG=1 /usr/local/src/emacs/src/emacs -q \
    -fn '-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--20-200-75-75-c-100-iso8859-1'

succeeds, although the splash screen shows

    xft:-bitstream-Bitstream Vera 
Sans-normal-normal-normal-*-20-*-*-*-*-0-iso10646-1 (#x51)

rather than

 xft:-bitstream-Bitstream Vera 
Sans-normal-normal-normal-*-16-*-*-*-*-0-iso10646-1

as shown by a simple `emacs -q'. 

However, evaluating  (find-file "~/.emacs-simple")  shows

    x:-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--20-200-75-75-c-100-iso8859-1 (#x72)

The *Faces* buffer has no empty boxes and two windows works fine.

A new frame created by emacsclient -c also succeeds.
