Any objection to my installing the patch below?

The main/only objection to the idea in the past was that we wanted to
keep a tag available "just in case", where the most obvious potential
use was to introduce a new type for characters (as XEmacs has).
This was discussed in the context of how to switch to Unicode, but we
switched to Unicode without introducing this new type, so it seems we
may as well use this extra tag rather than leave it wasted.

I do not think that extending the max buffer size from 256M to 512M (on
typical 32bit builds) is a tremendous improvement, but it may help some
users, and the downside seems rather small.
