The Org macros might do the job.  I am not sure, but I think that kbd
in Org format will look a lot like @kbd in Texinfo, but longer.  So it
seems that there is no advantage in Org format.

I think they can be self-describing, and they could be shorter and
less cumbersome than the current Texinfo syntax.

If you send me a list of the current simple markup characters,
I could make some proposals.

I agree that we should not go overboard on this.  It might be good for
10 common constructs to have character pairs to designate them, while
using Texinfo-like format with braces for the rest of the constructs.
