emacs cvs loses the start of the buffer |

In the latest cvs, if I move down a file and then try to move back up using
scroll-up I'm getting beginning-of-buffer signalled before I can see the
start of the buffer.
C-x l gives, when at line 1 in the window 'Page has 53221 lines (11 +
53210)', but scroll-up refuses to move. Seems to happen in all files I've
tried so far, backspace in gnus is afflicted with the same error
previous-line enables me to get to the real beginning of the buffer
In GNU Emacs 21.3.50.3 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
