I personally do not think that there is anything wrong with Emacs'
default font.  I certainly do not think that Emacs should look at
XTerm.font.  If the user customized XTerm.font in his .Xdefaults, then
there probably is a reason why he did _not_ customize *.font or
Emacs.font, and we should not act as if he actually did do that.
Actually, if a user has trouble reading things in general on his
computer screen, the problem is probably the screen resolution, rather
than the font size.  Even if it is specifically the font size, then
depending on one's setup, there are probably some general ways to
handle this.  For instance, if one uses the xfs server, then one can
use its configuration file (on my operating system,
/etc/X11/fs/config) and in particular, one can configure
`default-point-size'.
