    I don't see how M-x grep is different from e.g. M-x shell.  Calling
    M-x grep on a buffer in grep-mode but renamed to a name other than
    *grep* will create a new *grep* buffer.

Sorry, you are right.

So maybe M-x info should be changed as suggested.

In the old days, I had the idea that there would be just one Info
buffer, and you'd switch around viewing different things in it.  This
was to minimize memory usage.  But memory is much bigger now; that's
no longer necessary.  So please go ahead and make the change.
