latin1 input and underscores

latin1 input and underscores |

Symptoms:
With the latin-1-prefix input method, what is the reason for turning
input "_ " (underscore space) into "\ " (backslash space)? This
setting is rather burdensome for writing mails, where underscores are
often used to stress something. The only way to get round this is to
type in an extra character (such as a "b" or an additional "_"), which
one has to delete subsequently. _That_ cannot be the right way, I
should think ...
Thanks,
