This wasn't my modification, it's not my style. And in the output of cvs update I saw that mule-cmds.el was updated.
With this defective file GNU Emacs shell was in some ASCII or ISO Latin mode and buffers from files were always in UTF-8, even if they had ";;; -*- mode: Text; coding: iso-8859-1; -*-" in their header.
I'm going to update and rebuild my Emacsen now! (And check ps-print-buffer-with-faces then.)
