perl mode color highlighting working badly

Symptoms:

I am using 22.0.50 emacs and am having odd behavior with perl-mode
color highlighting.  I may be doing it wrong now since I notice a lot
of stuff in this version doesn't behave the same as 21.3.

Here is what I did, which works fine on 21.3

emacs-22.0.50 -q --no-site-file ~/regress. ~/.emacs

I went about 75% of the way down into the "regress." file. I then went
into the .emacs file and did an eval-region on this line

(global-font-lock-mode t)

Then back in the "regress." file the coloring of the code is all as if
it were the text between ""'s

I can type in that area and the new test is wrong also. If I scroll up
to the point where it has done the coloring properly, I can type
something right after the good text and that seems to made the text
below to colorize properly. Sometimes it doesn't go all the way and I
can move down and do the same thing until it is all done.

The "regress." file is about 1300 lines. I can provide that if needed.

The other thing I notice is that the coloring is done instantly. I
thought there was a delay so you didn't work the cpu to death as you
typed.




If emacs crashed, and you have the emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
    `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
