It's not a question whether I like it or not: it's faulty to assume a

I have file 4.02, and this version works correctly and reports 'ASCII
text.' What else should it assume, since it does not know that Richard
Koch made this signature (or header) an identifier for his TeXShop
application, making it recognise the encoding (you probably have an
idea of how many there exist) and the TeX dialect, i.e. which TeX
programme (or engine in TeXShop terms) would be going to compile the
document.
``%!TEX´´ is something private yet and not in the least related to any
PostScript.
