M-g in dired

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

In most contexts M-g is a prefix key, but in dired it is bound to
dired-goto-file.  I often run the command compile while visiting a
dired buffer, but cannot jump to errors with M-g M-n as usual.
