No, emacs 21.3.50.1 from cvs.

Although the function is defined in emacs-calendar, I seem not to be
able to run it interactively through M-x.

It messess up the calendar pretty badly and with invalid links. I
might have misunderstood you, can you post the whole new line?
Maybe I am using it wrong, since there is no documentation. This is
what I have in my .emacs for planner-calendar:
(require 'planner-calendar)
(add-hook 'emacs-wiki-before-markup-hook
'planner-calendar-insert-calendar-maybe)
