I am embarrassed that I didn't see that you were intending to work on
this before I posted something similar a few days ago.  Perhaps we
could merge them, and make it an option whether to look at the task or
schedule data?

About this note:

It is using appt-make-list as a hook in diary-hook that causes the
problem because it delete previous appointments.  I posted a bug report
about this, and was sent a patch to test; it seems to work, so I hope
it will be included in Emacs in the future, but I don't know quite
what to do about it in the meantime.

Since I have made some improvements to my planner-appt.el, here is the
latest version, which can also be found on my arch repository
