As I understand it, they are motivated by the same desire to use plan
pages instead of the diary for appointments.  They differ only in how
they derive appointment alerts from the page.

I have had a go at merging them together, included below.  It's only a
quick draft but it seems to work well enough.  I changed the function
and variable names around, fiddled with the insinuation, ran it
through `checkdoc', and had a go at documenting it.

The biggest difference in my part of the code is that I changed the
format of the appointment marker to make it consistent with
planner-task-appt: it's much better your way, I think.
