Thanks a ton for the explaination.

So in the case of Google talk, the 'node' is your gmail
username, 'domain' is gmail.com, and the actual server is
'talk.google.com'. What the above code does is that it automatically
figures out the server as 'talk.google.com' if the domain is
'gmail.com'.

But why do you have to specify both 'gmail.com' and 'talk.google.com'
in GAIM? Can you tell me the exact role played by 'gmail.com'. I
understand that the service is run on talk.google.com on port 5222.

Google's jabber server does not support all SASL mechanisms (only
supports the SASL PLAIN mechanism if I recall correctly).

That is true. I will check this aspect.

Look into the raw XML log and see where it's failing to figure it out.

Since the stream is TLS secured, how do I capture the XML traffic?
Ethereal would not work I guess.

People at the Jabber Development conference room (on address@hidden)
are pretty helpful about these matters.

Thanks for the pointer. I hope this is not going off-topic. Or should
I mark it [OT]?

Happy hacking,
Debarshi
