But why do you have to specify both 'gmail.com' and 'talk.google.com'
in GAIM? Can you tell me the exact role played by 'gmail.com'. I
understand that the service is run on talk.google.com on port 5222.

That is true. I will check this aspect.

Since the stream is TLS secured, how do I capture the XML traffic?
Ethereal would not work I guess.
