Hm, but shouldn't it be consistent within FreeType, so that I don't have to
know which type of font I'm dealing with? In the FreeType documentation I
found the following definition:

the descent 

the distance from the baseline to the lowest grid coordinate used to place
an outline point. This is a negative value, due to the grid's orientation.
