No.  The autohinter is the _solution_ to avoid using Apple's bogus patent.

Why bogus?  Because there are good indications that there are prior arts
to the so-called patent because Donald Knuth has used similar algorithms
in his TeX typesetting system long before TrueType came into being.
But then, I don't know enough details to judge, but I still like to call
Apple's patent "bogus".  Boy, that makes me feel good.  ;-)
