Great.  Surely, you are right--there must be a better way, but it's not
obvious to me exactly what that way is.

By the way, while your changes increase the quality of most fonts, I have
encountered a few cases where it lowered them. For example, try to display a waterfall of "Georgia" and "Times New Roman" and see how sizes 16 and 18 are. I'd like to correct this before the 2.1.4 release

I see what you mean.  This seems to fix the problem:
