- in general, if you want to upstream something to freetype, you should be willing and happy to patch your own system-wide freetype on it,
and break your own system, before you ask people to risk breaking theirs'... and wait for a few days to see if your own computer is still working fine. You would have discovered the issue about the taboo of not updating FT_Face in that manner. i.e. you should do some testing, before and instead of, asking people to test your patch for you.
