doco says that the two versions aren't really compatible. Am I
wrong/right/in between?
If you use ttf2pk/ttf2tfm (from teTeX or similar TeX distributions)
and/or ttftot42 you need FreeType 1.3.1.
FreeType 1 and FreeType 2 are completely different libraries! The
former supports some OpenType tables, the latter much more font
formats.
