[Freetype] Build errors

Ever since version 2.1.5 I've been unable to compile freetype. Here is
the error I got today trying to compile 2.1.9:

libtool: link: `/home/mike/build/objs/ftsystem.lo' is not a valid libtool object
make: *** [/home/mike/build/objs/libfreetype.la] Error 1

I have no problems compiling other software or version 2.1.5 of
freetype -- it just seems to be these newer versions of freetype that
are giving me problems.

I thought maybe it was a libtool problem, so I upgraded from 1.5.6 to
1.5.10 but it didn't make any difference. The rest of the system is
linux 2.4.26, gcc 3.2.3, and glibc 2.2.5.

If I run 'file' on ftsystem.lo, here is the output:

build/objs/ftsystem.lo: ELF 32-bit LSB relocatable, Intel 80386,
version 1 (SYSV), not stripped

Looks ok as far as I can tell. Any suggestions?
