per suggestion, i DL'd FT's cvs head.

config'ing w/:

./configure \
- --prefix=/usr/local/X11R6 \
- --mandir=/usr/local/X11R6/man \
- --with-quickdraw-toolbox \
- --without-quickdraw-carbon \
- --without-old-mac-fonts \
- --without-fsspec \
- --without-fsref \
- --with-ats

build/install are OK.

AND, now, subsequent of build of fontconfig , linked against  FT-cvs
looks good.

i'll now keep working 'downstream' ...
