It looks like that the the stems are not aligned in the "x" direction in sub-pixel hinting? I think it is intentional for v40 and I remembered to change this by adding fonts to the "`tricky' fonts list" in ttobjs.c during compiling time, but can we change this setting per font in fonts.conf using fontconfig at runtime?

Sincerely yours

B/W hinted rendering has been fixed in 2.8.1 – please upgrade.
Thank you! I've now upgraded to 2.8.1 and with that the noalias
rendering is now identical with v40 to the correct rendering in v35.

Very nice.

Then comes the next question, rendering with antialiasing. This is, as
far as I can tell from my screenshots, identical in 2.8 and 2.8.1, but
in my eyes not as good as the rendering in v35, the new result is not as
clear, it's fuzzier, harder to read.

Is this just a personal opinion of mine, or does anyone else agree?

Is this intentional, or a side-effect of something else?

Is there any way to get v40 to render antialiased like v35 did?
