EU software patent law delayed

BBC News Online
Wednesday, 22 December, 2004

Controversial new EU rules for the patenting of computer-based inventions have
been put on hold due to a last minute intervention from Poland.

Poland - a large and therefore crucial EU member - has requested more time to
consider the issue, especially as it relates to the patenting of software.

Critics say the law would favour large companies over small, innovative ones.

They say it could have massive ramifications for developments such as open
source software.

==============

"We are not for names, nor men, nor titles of Government, nor are we for
this party nor against the other but we are for justice and mercy and
truth and peace and true freedom, that these may be exalted in our
nation, and that goodness, righteousness, meekness, temperance, peace
and unity with God, and with one another, that these things may abound."
(Edward Burroughs, 1659 - from 'Quaker Faith and Practice')
