Thanks you everyone who responded on and off list; I really appreciate 
the first hand insight into so many devices.

One interesting sentiment which seems to be shared by most people is 
that the stock installs of GNU/Linux on these devices aren't very good...

I am now the happy owner of a secondhand Eeepc 901, thanks to the person 
who hand one which was "collecting dust". My initial impressions of the 
machine have been very good using eeebuntu, no doubt I'll find some 
gripes about it later!
