We could modify the branchname when a development stage changes.
For example:
# hg update beta1-rc
# hg branch "beta1-rc (frozen)"

But this would confuse the contributers of beta1-rc.  No, this is not
a good idea.
It would be nice, if the mercurial guys would implement a special
marker, which has no
meaning to hg, but only to humans.  Somewhat like in launchpad.
