Ideally, yes. Abstractions like that are usually good, although IOChannel may need to evolve some to support the 64 I/O channels used in a single RTMP connection, plus to handle sending Camera and Microphone AMF objects to a server.
Replacing any package always has a bit of uncertainty, but I'm not worried about it. I've got some thoughts on adding support for testing networking, more than what I do now, which is mostly just testing encoding and decoding of packets.
