There are probably (lots of) people who won't use a mailing list or IRC 
no matter what. For those people a forum is the difference between 
getting no help and being a (happy) user.

If you could get some kind of integration working between mailing list 
and forum then it would have a good chance of succeeding, I think. Keep 
us updated.
