I suggested two separate possibilities.  Neither violates that law.  I
don't much like "-v <level>", of course.  Users will have at most two
desired alternatives to default verbosity, they should be accessible
tersely.  "-v -v" is also awkward, but not so unreasonable for what is
probably primarily a debugging facility.
