I follow this trick using CVS and it works fine, but then I don't usually
do merges (commit/update often enough and you won't have to).
Alternatively; I know there are XMLDiff tools for Java, my guess is that
if you look hard enough you will find one pre-compiled and ready to run.
It would be interesting to see if and how that works together with tla.
