tar complained about not finding the path:
implementation-airway-seg-rgrow--dev--0.1--base-0/{arch}/,,inode-sigs/address@hidden
And that path would have been a subdirectory of
/home/jfmeinel/dev/vida/vida/src/plugins/interfaces/airway-seg/,,get*****************
I don't remember what was after the get. But it is a pretty long string.

I have v.12 according to the Changelog.

I don't need to be able to run tla on the same directories. Mostly D is
just because some of the datasets I work on are multiple GB, so I don't
want to copy them to two filesystems. I just put source on there because
it has a lot of space. For tla, it isn't a big deal to put it back on C:.

Now, I'm assuming that the problem is that even with the collapsing
features, the directory is still too long. I checked, and the directory
(including the sub-paths) could be as long as 240 characters.

could you indicate the path that was too long?
Maybe I missed some 'prefix'
Also check if you have the latest version
(head /usr/share/tla/Changelog)
if you don't have v0.10, please upgrade and try again.

It seems to me that the problem is tar still expands all the
directories, and then they are collapsed after the fact.

not so, the bundled tar converts the paths to collapsed paths
before interacting with the filesystem, and the other way around
before writing to the tar file...

it would be nice if tla-cygwin would support both NTFS and FAT32.

I agree. Unfortunately, FAT32 does not seem to have an equivalent
of "inode" numbers, which NTFS does seem to have and tla needs.

but then all my shared data goes onto D

mind you that cygwin-tla and tla only interoperate at the (public) archive
level, so you will not be able to use tla-linux and tla-cygwin on the same
directory/archives. (although you could compile tla with my patch on linux
to do so!)
