A botched invariant is not a user error, so the right fix is to not fail the invariant in the first place. Fail higher up. The right error is "File with high-bit characters in filename encountered."

This invariant happens because the filenames are compared signed in one place and unsigned in another. Considering I reported this bug about the same time last year, I don't hold out much hope that it will be fixed unless I fix it.
