   As I'm careful to always use meaningful tags, that tells me exactly
   what was diffed, and does so in an in-band manner that is unlikely to
   get lost (e.g., by patch-munging programs) or overlooked.

Well, meaningful tags are useful (like when you work on two branches,
as your example shows), but non-meaningful ones suck, like what is
currently being use, mod and orig.  Which to my experience is what
most people use, non-meaningful ones.
