It does work but you may have to increase the argument a bit
to notice how it shortens the ties. You may also want to combine
this with
\property Staff.Tie \override #'extra-offset = #'(0 . 0.6)
which raises the ties by 0.6 (the unit for all these numbers
is the separation between two staff lines).
