The RegEx book is pretty terse for a complete beginner (tech head flame wars
begin).
IMHO, to learn from the ground up get access to Perl, and Google "regular
expressions" with things like "faq" or "tutorial".

Here's a tutorial that doesn't require anything, it has an interactive
applet.
