I'm not quite sure I understand how GNU Go would help you.
It sounds as if you want to play Go with someone else on
your same local network and use GNU Go. This seems more
a feature of a client or server.

Could you explain in more detail what it is you have in mind?

Our focus is on writing a program that plays Go strongly
and there might be other free software that would be helpful
