Great! This solves the problems I reported.

In fact, I had also tracked it down to a tactical reading problem. But
the bug was only reproducable by
 - compiling with optimization
 - running without sgf output
 - running without trace output
 
I can't think of many more features a GNU Go bug could have to make
debugging it ugly...
