it seems to me that people think gnugo is so lousy that it is not worth
while to play with it.

I don't think so.

See the following URL's with robots on KGS powered by GnuGo. These 6 are basically
playing 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.

http://kgs.kiseido.com/en_US/gameArchives.jsp?pageNum=1&user=gnubie (> 8400 games)
http://kgs.kiseido.com/en_US/gameArchives.jsp?pageNum=1&user=yagr
http://kgs.kiseido.com/en_US/gameArchives.jsp?pageNum=1&user=gnugobot (> 8400 games)

http://kgs.kiseido.com/en_US/gameArchives.jsp?pageNum=1&user=swegnubot
http://kgs.kiseido.com/en_US/gameArchives.jsp?pageNum=1&user=ngcbot

also interesting btw that quite a few people are willing to devote the resources of their computer
to computer go.

This is just 6 that I know of that are playing right now. There are a lot more around. This testifies certainly to the fact that kgs provides a good GUI, but also says something about GnuGo IMO (and the GTP).
GnuGo provides a good level of play at a very acceptable speed.

The games are played mainly against kyu players, for who gnugo is a serious opponent. But dan players often have a hard time against the bots in higher handicap games as well,
as I see browsing through the results.

Here are there ranking graphs
