Very nice. That does indeed work with GCC 7.
Are you planning to move that to gnulib? I am pretty sure I saw places
to use it in at least two of these three other packages: sed,
diffutils, coreutils.

I get too much email, too, but like the idea of requiring an email per
patch (albeit onerous, it feels best for the community), so think
using grep-devel is the right approach.
