Indeeed, UNKNOWN is used when the property isn't found for the device.
You should have in the log a message along

"Hal property %s in command '%s' not found (or OOM)"

Looks, good, applied in cvs, thanks! Actually, in other parts of the code
property was checked not to be NULL...
