Clearly, MacOS does not have anything to do it, as I a long time made my
own patch.

It is simply so that ".tab" isn't very logical, and it ".y" or nothing
ought to be better. If one does not want it as an optional feature, it is
easy to hardwire either choice.

Then you and others that like ".tab" can easily write a shell script. :-)

One important principle in programming language design I think is to help
people to avoid having to play tricks all the time, as it distracts from
the real programming tasks.
