Try putting this in your .emacs:
(require 'ansi-color)
(setq ansi-color-for-comint-mode t)
Or, use eshell instead.

shell-strip-ctrl-m doesn't remove those color escape codes. It does
exactly what the name suggests, removes ^M's from output.
