I don't use Mac, but the following lines in my .emacs work well both
on Windows and on Linux:
;;; Spelling
(setq ispell-program-name "aspell")
(autoload 'flyspell-mode "flyspell" "On-the-fly spelling." t)
(require 'ispell)
