dired-do-shell-command in Emacs 22 -- how to get back Emacs 21 behaviour

From: Adam P.
Subject: dired-do-shell-command in Emacs 22 -- how to get back Emacs 21 behaviour of dired's ! (no space requirement around wildcards)?
Date: Thu, 07 Feb 2008 15:23:21 +0100
User-agent: Gnus/5.1007 (Gnus v5.10.7) Emacs/21.4 (gnu/linux)

In Emacs 22:

,---- etc/NEWS ---
| ** In Dired's ! command (dired-do-shell-command), `*' and `?' now
| control substitution of the file names only when they are surrounded
| by whitespace.
`-----------------

Is it possible to have the Emacs 21 behaviour back, i.e., without the
whitespace requirement?

In my dired-guess-shell-alist-user I defined, e.g.:

("\\.doc$" "antiword -m UTF-8.txt ? > ?.txt")

which allowed me to convert a number of Word files into corresponding
plain text files in one go. This doesn't work in Emacs 22...

P.S. Looked for an answer in Emacs info, gnu.emacs.help and comp-emacs
-- to no avail.
