Trying out Lily

Hi GNUser's

At last I take the time to throw myself into studying Lilypond and it doesn't
start off too well, now that I've found this manual starting out with a Bach
menuett it looked promising.
I wrote the score as issued and saved it as recommended 'menuet.ly'. And now I
shall 'compile' it, aha! is meant this for programmers only? Well, I'm not a
programmer, so how do I compile a file?
I tryed doing: 'lilypond menuett.ly' and got this:
----------------------------
 [/usr/share/lilypond/scm/lily.scm]
Parsing...[/usr/share/lilypond/ly/init.ly[/usr/share/lilypond/ly/decla
rations.ly[/usr/share/lilypond/ly/nederlands.ly][/usr/share/lilypond/l
y/chord-modifiers.ly][/usr/share/lilypond/ly/script.ly[/usr/share/lily
pond/scm/script.scm]][/usr/share/lilypond/ly/generic-paper.ly][/usr/sh
are/lilypond/ly/paper20.ly[/usr/share/lilypond/ly/params.ly[/usr/share
/lilypond/ly/a4.ly][/usr/share/lilypond/ly/paper.ly][/usr/share/lilypo
nd/ly/engraver.ly[/usr/share/lilypond/ly/auto-beam-settings.ly][/usr/s
hare/lilypond/ly/auto-beam-settings.ly]]]]
error: parse error
----------------------------
Ok, I try again but same results.....:-(
What am I doing wrong?
If I don't compile the file by doing 'lilypond [file]' then how shall I do it?

Thank's in advance for a little help.
