The MFINPUTS and TEXINPUTS variables should begin or end with a
colon, ':' when you run ly2dvi, otherwise TeX won't find its
default input files. The file
lilypond-1.3.xx/buildscripts/out/lilypond-profile shows how
you can do the settings.
