I think you're missing an "$(INSTALL) -d ..... $(LIBDIR)" somewhere,

Attached is a patch to visualize what I mean (also includes the 
BATCHUSER thing, but you already know that).

Install runs fine with these lines fixed.

Compared to my crazy 1.4 install a big step ;-)
