[help-gv] message display?

In the old versiuon of gv,
a program

%!

(123) ==

showpage

==================================

would pop open a message window and display 
(123)
just as if the message window were the console when running 
ghostscript.  I can't see that this same
feature exists in GNU gv.
Or am I missing something?  If it is
not there, it should be - it is very, very useful
for debugging PS programs.
