VPATH and Makefiles

Hi,

   Can gmake search for "makefile" based on VPATH, if
"makefile" or any of it's variants are not present in
current directory ? For e.g., i have two directories
/home/usr/dev/ and /home/usr/off/. The "makefile" is
present only in /home/usr/off/ directory. If i set
(export) VPATH to "home/usr/off" and invoke "gmake" in
"/home/usr/dev/" then it should automatically take the
"makefile" from "/home/usr/off". I tried this and is
not working. Is there any way that i can do this in
gmake ?
